Feldenkrais
The Feldenkrais Method is a somatic educational approach designed to enhance an individual's awareness of movement patterns, promote efficient and graceful actions, and facilitate overall well-being. Developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli physicist and Judo expert, this practice focuses on refining sensory perception and motor skills through gentle, exploratory movements. The method operates on the principle that individuals can learn to move more efficiently, reduce tension, and improve flexibility by increasing self-awareness and cultivating a deeper understanding of their own body mechanics.
Central to the Feldenkrais Method is the idea of neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize itself based on experience and learning. Practitioners engage in a series of carefully crafted movements and guided awareness exercises, known as Awareness Through Movement lessons, which encourage participants to explore novel and often subtle variations of familiar actions. By cultivating mindfulness and refining sensory awareness, individuals can overcome habitual limitations, discover new movement possibilities, and develop a heightened sense of body awareness. These lessons are typically performed with an emphasis on comfort and avoiding unnecessary effort, fostering a non-judgmental and exploratory mindset.
In addition to Awareness Through Movement lessons, the Feldenkrais Method includes Functional Integration—a one-on-one, hands-on approach where a certified practitioner guides and supports a client through personalized movement explorations. Through this combination of group lessons and individualized sessions, the Feldenkrais Method aims to empower individuals to improve their movement quality, reduce pain and discomfort, and enhance overall physical and mental well-being. This practice is appreciated for its adaptability, making it accessible to people of all ages and physical conditions.Find out more about Moshe Feldenkrais and his fascinating mind and life
